On my hook: Original crochet tote bag for a workshop and pattern

Yes, I know there are hundreds of crochet bags, market totes, eco-totes on Ravelry, and now, I’m going to add to the bounty. I wanted a lunch bag sized tote that was mesh (aka uses less yarn) and could cinch or tie shut without having to make a knot or bow. Viola! The Big Snack Bag was born!

For my prototype, I created a small mesh bag in Lily Sugar & Cream WW cotton and I love the way it turned out, but i’m wondering how this bag would work in a DK weight mercerized cotton? Or nylon? I used the same pattern for a thinner weight yarn and a smaller hook and now I have mesh tote for a small snack. I ended up making another tote, adding an additional increase round, a few more rows for height, and that solved the size issue.

The Big Snack Bag is a great pattern for beginning crocheters that uses many basic skills. The pattern uses the following techniques: single crochet (sc), chain (ch), slip stitch (slst), and working in the round. The bag is worked from the bottom up, increasing to create the base, then continuing upward for the height. The handle is created in in two rounds, all in one piece. For the advanced crocheters, you could create the handle with a fsc chain and call it a day! Either way, it’s a project for all skill levels.

Pictured here is the BSB in 100% nylon crochet thread with its pull-through handle and tricorn style closure. I hope you enjoy how straightforward it is to make. You’ll get to tote around your big snacks all Spring and Summer long!

Where's NatHip?

I don't do craft fairs, but I'm trying it out tomorrow! If you are local, please come to the first UNH Makers Expo in Durham, NH. Here's a blurb that was sent throughout the UNH community:

The UNH Makers Expo is a creative goods sale featuring products all made by UNH students, staff, and faculty. It features about 50 UNH vendors selling everything from jewelry to ceramics to metal work, cupcakes, books, you name it. Folks from all across campus are represented! We have everything from engineers, to arts majors, psychology folks to housing dept. staff. It’s going to be a super event and the start of a new UNH tradition.

Friday, December 2, 2016
11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Free Admission!

I've been making new hats and cowls, in addition to thinking about how to display my goods. It's a lot to think about! But once I get through this expo, I will be ready for the next one. Maybe I will jump on the craft fair bandwagon :)

I hope to see you at UNH tomorrow. Stop by, say hello, and enter the raffle to win one of my hats. The winner will be chosen at 6:00 p.m. How about that immediate gratification?!

Thanks & stay warm!

There's at least three...

It's my process. I love creating new designs of hats, cowls, gloves, and tops, and I always write down what I do...somewhere. I've progressed from scraps of random paper (easy to lose), to notebooks (can't remember which one), to finally, Evernote. I have a digital notebook that holds my creations that I can access on multiple devices. Perfect for on-the-go creativity!

Now, back to the three. As I yarn my item, for example, a hat, I write down each step - cast on, repeats, patterns, decreases, increases - until I finish it. Number one. I inspect the hat for any changes or modifications I would like to make, then I modify the written pattern. I follow my modified pattern and make the hat again. Number two. If I'm happy with the result and for good measure, I follow this pattern again to make sure there are no errors. Number three.

My latest pattern is Shadow. This is a two-color ribbed pattern where, when stretched out, the inner channels show a contrast color. My written pattern make sense, so now I'm transferring all of that information onto my pattern template. Shadow will be available soon! In the mean time, I have three new hats :)

Enjoy!

Trying something new!

I truly enjoy creating custom items. Now two are alike! So I'm opening up twelve spaces to fill on my yarning queue just for you. My shop has a link to reserve your spot, so take a look around my site to get some ideas, or send me a picture of something you've seen in a magazine or ad.

Here's the process: You reserve a space through the shop and describe the item (hat, gloves, or scarf/cowl). We'll e-mail each other as many times as necessary to finalize color and design. The cost of the item will depend on the style, size, and fiber choice, but generally runs between $35 to $50.

Thank you for your interest!
